SustyVibes is quietly revolutionising the way young people engage with sustainability. It is a youth-led organisation whose mission is to transform sustainability from a daunting concept into a relatable, actionable, and admirable endeavour for the younger generation. Jennifer founded the organisation, which has grown from a simple blog into a dynamic force for environmental and mental well-being. We chatted with her about what SustyVibes has achieved so far and what impact she sees it creating over the next 5 years.

The Genesis of Susty Vibes

Jennifer Uchendu's journey into the world of sustainability began with her academic background in biochemistry. Despite her passion for environmental issues, she faced numerous challenges in finding a job in the sustainability sector due to her degree not being directly related to the environment. This obstacle, however, became the catalyst for the creation of Susty Vibes. Uchendu envisioned an organisation where young people could gain the necessary experience and qualifications to pursue careers in sustainability.

SustyVibes started as a blog, a platform for Uchendu to share her thoughts and ideas on sustainability. The blog quickly gained traction, attracting a community of like-minded individuals. This growing interest led to the first meet-and-greet event, which saw a significant turnout and marked the beginning of SustyVibes as a movement. Today, the organisation is celebrating its ninth anniversary, having evolved into a robust entity that prioritises environmental health and mental well-being.

Empowering Youth

At the core of SustyVibes is the belief that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow but the changemakers of today. The organisation equips its members with the knowledge and skills needed to drive meaningful change through hands-on projects and training sessions. These initiatives are designed to be youth-led and youth-focused, allowing members to experiment, learn, and grow in a supportive environment.

One of the key strategies employed by SustyVibes is the concept of "failing forward." This approach encourages members to learn from their mistakes and continuously improve. The organisation also collaborates with subject matter experts to provide training and share insights from the field. However, the most impactful learning comes from the projects themselves. For instance, the head of projects at Susty Vibes, Sonia Ugwunna who joined the organisation at the age of 18, has gained extensive experience in project management and stakeholder engagement through her work with the organisation. She might not have been allowed to learn these skills in an organisation that doesn’t value a learning on the job approach.

Addressing Eco-Anxiety

Eco-anxiety, the chronic fear of environmental doom, is a significant issue among young people today. SustyVibes recognises this and has taken proactive steps to support its members in managing these feelings. The Eco-Anxiety Africa Project, launched in 2022 aims to explore and understand eco-anxiety within the African context. Through this project, SustyVibes has conducted extensive research and created safe spaces for young people to discuss their emotions.

One such initiative is the Zen Cafe, a space where members can drop by to talk about their feelings and receive peer support. Research has shown that validating and naming these emotions is crucial in managing eco-anxiety. The Zen Cafe provides a platform for young people to connect with others who share their concerns, fostering a sense of community and resilience.

In addition to peer support, SustyVibes also emphasises the importance of intergenerational support. The organisation engages with elders who have been involved in the environmental movement, seeking their wisdom and guidance. This intergenerational dialogue not only provides valuable insights but also helps bridge the gap between different generations, fostering mutual understanding and support.

International Impact and Creative Expression

The organisation actively engages in international projects. These initiatives often focus on research and advocacy, leveraging the creativity and passion of young people to drive change. For instance, SustyVibes has used art and social media to amplify the voices of young people and raise awareness about environmental issues in Nigeria.

One notable project is the Bioverse NG which explores the intersection of biodiversity and climate change in Nigeria. This initiative has brought young people to the forefront of critical conversations, highlighting their role in shaping the future of environmental protection. Susty Vibes' international work demonstrates that young people can contribute meaningfully to global sustainability efforts regardless of location.

Memorable Milestones and Future Aspirations

2024 was a landmark year for Susty Vibes, marked by several significant achievements. The organisation launched its Zen Cafes, providing physical and virtual spaces for members to discuss their emotions related to the environment. SustyVibes also opened its first physical office in Lagos, creating a dedicated space for collaboration and innovation.

Another highlight of 2024 was Susty Vibes' debut in the Nigerian film industry. The organisation was featured in a movie, Sweet Stitch, bringing its work to a broader audience and breaking out of traditional environmental spaces. This recognition was a testament to Susty Vibes' growing influence and its ability to engage with diverse audiences.

Looking ahead, SustyVibes is focused on two main priorities: playing a significant role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and maintaining a balance between urgency and well-being. With only five years left to achieve the SDGs, the organisation is committed to making sustainability a part of everyday life for more people. At the same time, SustyVibes recognises the importance of rest and mental health, striving to create a sustainable balance between action and self-care.

As our conversation with Jennifer came to a close, it was clear that SustyVibes is making sustainability relatable and actionable, the organisation empowers youth to take charge of their future. Through innovative projects, supportive communities, and a focus on mental well-being, SustyVibes is addressing environmental challenges and nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders. As the organisation grows and evolves, its impact will undoubtedly be felt across all the countries it works in, inspiring a global movement towards a more sustainable and equitable world.
